Are we at odds? - human beings in general. Perhaps the artists are the ones that feel the need to recognize it, talk about it, come to grips with it, represent it and communicate it. But sure, let's start with artists as our example. We seek to be individual, make our mark, contribute, find purpose and meaning within a challenging world of experiences, and yet we seek the community of others to share common ground, joys, hopes, and fears. Is this not human nature? - never more apparent from the ages of two to adolescence...okay it just keeps going from there ;) In different ways, the duality of purpose continues for us all. We see it in outward expressions, our humour, our memes, our friends, our associations, our "likes" our clothes, our art, our social platforms of choice, and all things trending. Everyday we get up with the hope of addressing our basic individual needs as desires for both autonomy and belonging. "No man"/woman/child - Let's just say person - "is an island," (17th C. author - John Donne.) and 'art indeed does not exist in a vacuum' (the source/context of this thought is unclear as it has been reiterated many times, and in many forms). Long story - short - we need each other. Now more than ever it seems.
I recognize now through this concentrated creative time that the images that resonate with me for creating have this duality in mind. They are contrasts: control v. chaos, symmetry v. asymmetry. I recognize that duality in the context of my times as well. I will see what comes of it as expression. The beginnings of it are taking hold by working creatively as a contemporary person with the ancient form of Mandalas. Honest, I meant to go with a light quote for a Friday. where did this come from? This is where a well place meme would come in handy.
