"Dennis the Writer" my logical friend, aka "the Distinguished Library," has been giving me all the technical advice I needed to set up the website, learn about, kickstarter, and a myriad of other useful publishing tips. Between his fully functioning left brain and my predominant right we've got this covered.
Meeting the writers at Chapters/Starbucks to discuss mutual publishing interest - Left to right: George the Writer, myself, and Dennis the Writer. My collaborative book project with Dennis will follow the project with George. There has been great benefit to sharing ideas. Both George and Dennis have written and published several books. This is my first venture in children's books.
It is two days before I planned to launch the website, and there seems to be so many details to address still. The store shelves are waiting for inventory (everything takes time - They are the canvasses on my shelves and the thoughts in my head). My reality is that I have work tomorrow and everyday of the week. I teach full time and my art awaits its scheduled time slot from 4:15 am to 5:30 am. That is the only way to make this happen. However, I must remind myself that this idea is really 1. about engaging the creative process/365, and seeing it unfold from its raw concept stage to fully realized creativity, and 2. creating a storefront for this creative life to sustain itself, find it audience and grow into whatever it might become beyond the first book. Perfection is such a fleeting idea, and I am far from that. So many hours are already in this endeavor from the time spent with website development, meeting with writer friends Dennis and George to share ideas and the wealth of their creative experience and support, researching other platforms to network the project and in the early mornings just creating the illustration pages I have so far - the whole purpose of this website in the first place - to invite you as I would a trusted friend, to witness the creative work behind the scenes of the children's book from start to finish. The book called Aldo Renaldo (manuscript by George Johnson) is the story of a young boy who has set himself the monumental task of learning an unruly alphabet - each letter developing it's characteristic - and 26 challenging minds of their own (not unlike a typical classroom). This website will be a record of both journey's, the artist's and Aldo's. You'll laugh, I'll cry, and Aldo will learn.
There is a plan for a kickstarter campaign to follow, where supporters as artist patron's can choose to be a part of the book launching journey but this website is really where the project lives and breathes. I'll keep you posted with daily blog entries for you to see how Aldo is doing or share your thoughts. Most of us only see the books once they are on book shelves, but you will get the insider's view, trials and tribulations right from the artist's work desk! I don't usually let people peek over my shoulder when I'm making my art but there is a first time for everything and you can be my guest. Welcome to my creative space!
